Vibrant Voices: Songs and Stories of Sanctuary

One World Choir

21-28 June | Time: 12:00 - 17:00 | Venue: Soft Ground

ABOUT THE SHOW

“People need to come and see this choir. It’s food for the soul. You’ll leave feeling uplifted and inspired!” (Beccy, audience member)

Sheffield One World Choir is a choir with refugees and people seeking asylum from many countries, including Afghanistan, Congo, Iran, Nigeria, Sudan and Ukraine, who bring their songs and stories to Sheffield.

In this combined choral performance and photographic exhibition, our songs reflect our rich cultural diversity and include original compositions. The photographs are created by choir members and shine a light on their experience of migration and life in Sheffield. Come and be inspired!

This exhibition forms a part of our full exhibition & installation line-up at Soft Ground, including:

  • Madeleina Kay - Fragments of Identity: Portraits of Migration

  • Craft Camp with Women supported by Refugee Council - Wonderful Women! A Story Quilt

  • Phoebe Shu-Ching Chan - Layering Memories.层叠的记忆

  • Frontier Media - The Matter of Migration Podcast and Installation

  • One World Choir - Vibrant Voices: Songs and Stories of Sanctuary

  • Studio Kalinka - Sounds of the City / Sounds of the Globe

ABOUT THE COMPANY

This life-enhancing, sociable and diverse choir within Sheffield brings together people seeking asylum, refugees and other people living in Sheffield. We hope to break down barriers between people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds through singing; we also promote cultural awareness and mutual respect through sharing songs from group members’ countries or cultures.

We started in early 2018 with just a handful of singers, and thankfully we grew into a vibrant and welcoming community choir. We meet weekly at The Central United Reform Church, Sheffield city centre.
