Food for Thought

The Writers Workshop, Family Voice and Ammi’s Kitchen

26 June | Time: 12:30 | Venue: Common Ground Community Centre

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Food connects us to our cultures and communities, providing nourishment and rich smells and tastes that spark memories and stories from our histories.

Join Narimaan Shafi and the team at Family Voice to explore your connection to food, as we use writing prompts and shared recipes to tell our stories, connecting us in the room and beyond. We’ll make creative booklets to keep, and we’ll share food provided by Ammi’s Kitchen. The workshop is suitable for women who have lived experience of migration, displacement, seeking sanctuary or refugee status, and you do not need to have writing experience.

If you or your organisation work with global majority women's groups, please contact workshopwrite@gmail.com for more information about attending this workshop

  • Summer Pearl is a music artist from London, who has been consistent in writing, recording and performing in the UK and around the world since the age of 16.

Known for her care-free live performances and to the point lyrics, Summer Pearl transcends you to a place of soul and truth. "My music is a reflection of my past and a meditation of our present. It is both a personal and sometimes political message exploring black and female liberation, love gained and love lost and anything I feel. I'm heavily influenced by Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, R&B and Reggae. I channel the experiences of my ancestors, women and myself to conjure emotions to write and express".

In 2019 Summer released her debut EP, 'Only Child'. A four track project which reflected Summer’s personality which tracks named ‘Intro’ , ‘Mind’ , ‘Body’ and ‘Soul’. All tracks differing in genre, but tied together with Summer’s signature sound. During the height of the pandemic, in 2020, Summer wrote and released her second project, 'Times Like These' , which she made in lockdown: a 2 track EP tackling racial injustice and being locked down. Summer also released 8 singles; some of which featuring the likes of ENNY, LEVi and Eerf Evil In 2021, Summer collaborated with the Vinyl Factory and Soho Radio recording a 2 track vinyl, live. Visuals and Vinyl Out Now. 2022 saw Summer play the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival, where she was invited by the director of the festival personally, who dubbed her as being an artist who is involved with the "evolution of Jazz".

In 2023, Summer had 2 headline shows in Switzerland, one of which in the capital city of Bern, the other at the amazing Cully Jazz Festival which sold out, supported the King of UK Soul, Omar which has since recieved rave reviews and headlined her own night at JazzRefreshed. In November, Summer released her 3rd project titled 'outmysystem'. with collaborations from Liam Bailey, LEVi and Kaidi Thatam. In the same month, Summer sold out her headline show at London Jazz Festival at The Lower Third, Soho; in collaboration with Appleton Rum.
