My Pollera, My Story

Carolina Rieckhof and Moyra Silva

21st June | 15:00 | Crucible Theatre

"My Pollera, My Story" workshop explores the profound symbolism and beauty embodied in the Pollera: A traditional Andean decorated skirt. Participants explore decorative symbols, ranging from geometric patterns to botanical elements, uncovering deeper meanings within.

A writing exercise will help us to discover our personal designs and generate movement around migration narratives. Once they finish their Polleras participants will explore movements inspired by the experience of wearing the skirts, creating a collective Pollera dance! Intertwining design and movement to narrate their own immigrant experiences.

About Carolian Rieckhof & Moyra Silva

Rieckhof and Silva are Peruvian immigrant artists living in the UK collaborating in art-based research practice projects, intertwining movement, costume and social justice.

Carolina is a collaborative artist who investigates the relationship that exists between the limits of sculpture, clothing, and the body in movement. In 2011, she collaborated on the creation of the Somatic Costume, Movement, and Performance project, which explores costumes as an element that carries sensations and symbolism, creating a relationship of body-mind consciousness. In recent years, she has dedicated herself to collaborating in the creation of costumes and performative objects with artists from different disciplines.

Moyra is a movement thinker, performer and multidisciplinary researcher connecting performance, visual arts, and anthropology. Her practice centres on embodied knowledge, understood as knowing in and through the body, relationships between bodies and space, mixed ancestry, interculturality and migration. She is interested in the possibilities of art to create moments of reflection seeking a social and political effect by involving the audience. She works through interdisciplinary collaborations projects, such as music/movement duo CorpusMedio, their last work “Grifo” was released this year and “Limas utopicas” a site specific group piece created in Peru has been screened at numerous dance film festivals around the world.
