Penguin
Hamzeh Al Hussien & Amy Golding
24 June | Time: 19:30 | Venue: Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse
ABOUT THE SHOW
Be proud. Be who you are. Be more penguin.
I am Hamzeh. I love shisha, I hate soup. This is the story of my life (so far). People have many questions. The answer is 'Yes, I can do anything'.
Full of humour and beauty, Hamzeh’s extraordinary story transports you to his village in Syria, Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan, Gateshead and inside his mind: a place full of music, dancing, fantasies and marbles. Hamzeh invites you to be his childhood friends, to hold the moon to light the way into his dreams, brushing the dust from his clothes and taking to the stage.
The performance has integrated captions in both English and Arabic.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Hamzeh and Amy met in Gateshead, in the north east of England in 2018. Hamzeh was newly arrived in the area from Jordan, where he lived in Za'atari Refugee Camp for 6 years after having to flee Syria due to the war. Hamzeh was introduced to theatre at Za'atari touring shows across the camp and facilitating workshops with young people with disabilities. On arrival in the UK he was introduced to Amy. Amy is a UK based theatre maker and activist, has been making work for over 20 years that tells stories that are often underrepresented on our stages. Both are passionate about truthfully representing the voices of people seeking sanctuary as refugees in their work. The work they make together strives to find humour, light and hope in the difficult things. After meeting, they knew they were destined to work together and have been collaborating ever since. Penguin was their first show together (previously produced by Curious Monkey), and Hamzeh's professional debut, which toured the UK in 2023, picking up rave reviews and an awarding Hamzeh as Best Newcomer at the North East Culture Awards.
Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the North Shields Cultural Quarter.
