Local Foreigners - Photography Exhibition

Local Foreigners is a documentary project created by Ukrainian photographer Maryna Sulym to dignify the image of migration. It is a collection of personal stories and powerful photos of people who chose to make the UK their home.

Each participant chose a location for their portrait that was most meaningful to them and was able to guide the creation of their portraits, having full control over how they would be seen. The project shows the diversity and complexity of immigration. Viewers can learn about different experiences and perspectives of migration, as well as find a story similar to their own.

About Maryna Sulym

Maryna is a Ukrainian photographer and artist living in London. Since enrolling in an MA in Photojournalism in 2020, she has focused her research on the image of migration. Realising that migrants are mainly portrayed as victims or threats in traditional media, she created Local Foreigners to show the real face of migration.

Commissions by museums and the Arts Council have helped her to travel around the UK to interview more than 50 people for the project. Each story is created in collaboration with the participant. She says, β€œIt has been my pleasure to learn from so many people about their unique experiences of migration.”
